A set of Mosquito add-on pieces contains one black and one white Mosquito. These pieces can be added to a standard Hive set and can be placed in the same way as other pieces. Once in play, a Mosquito can take on the movement ability of any creature of either colour that it is touching at the start of its move, thus changing its movement characteristics throughout the game.
In detail:
- if a Mosquito is touching more than one other piece, it can take on the movement characteristics of any one of the pieces it is touching
- if a Mosquito is only touching another Mosquito at the start of a turn, it may not move at all
- a stack with a Beetle on top counts as a Beetle, i.e. a Mosquito touching such a stack cannot take on the movement characteristics of any of the pieces hidden under the Beetle
- if a Mosquito is moved as a Beetle onto the top of the Hive, it then continues to move as a Beetle until it climbs down
